# Modifications

The following has been extracted from an old JAVA magazine & is anonymous.

“As a J21 sailor, I have carried out some modifications………… I have removed the steps to the cabin, & replaced them with a strong shelf. This is located & fixed across the aft end of the bunks, & not only provided extra work top area, but allows easier access to the area beneath the cockpit sole.

On the starboard bunk, we have fitted a shallow bunk front onto a false plywood base. When stowed this slides under the bunk cushion, allowing normal bunk width. Before turning in, however, the unit is pulled out & clipped to the keel housing. The bunk cushion is slid across, giving another 6” of width to the bunk. One could make narrow infill to cover the whole area with cushioning. (See drawing).

To improve the handling of the boat, I have replaced the wire strop arrangement for the main sheet pulley with a rigid traveler & horse arrangement. A suitable length of 2”x11/2” teak was shaped to fit over the line of seats & through bolted with backing pads. A length of sheet runner & traveler are then fitted to the top. This obviously facilitates improved mainsail control.”
